A Twisted Affair
In the series premiere, it is revealed that neighbors Randal and Alex, both of whom are married to other people, are having an affair. Marcie, Randal's wife, desperately wants to have children with Randal, but he is preoccupied with Alex. Natalie, a single mother of four children, is trying to make ends meet while balancing her children, job and a relationship with her son Frank's father, Lushion. She also has to make a difficult decision: Her eldest son, Joey, who is in prison on drug charges, can only get out on parole if she allows him to come home to live. Can she find the trust to give him a second chance? Esperanza is trying to move on with her life while keeping her relationship with her boyfriend, Julius, a secret from her ex-husband, Eddie. Meanwhile, single mother Kelly longs to marry Travis, who is several years her junior. Travis is away on a relief mission in Haiti.
Shots Fired
Brad is evasive with Alex as she tries to discuss her pregnancy. Natalie introduces Lushion to her friends at the children's baseball game with hopes that they can help him get a job on the Maxine police force. Moments later, Eddie shows his true colors when he confronts Esperanza about her new man. Kelly decides to purchase a home in Alex and Marcie's neighborhood, but when she calls Travis to tell him the good news, she discovers that there are women on the mission in Haiti. Marcie confides in Alex about her struggle to conceive and her suspicions that something is going on with Randal. Later, Edward breaks into Esperanza's house to gather information about whom she is seeing. Once Edward discovers who Julius is, he begins to track him down.
Alex Is Pregnant
Esperanza interrogates Edward about the whereabouts of her boyfriend Julius. Out of desperation, she threatens Edward by mentioning that she will tell his boss what he has done. Meanwhile, Brad suspects that Alex is having an affair, and asks Randal for his help. Then, Natalie reaches the end of her rope in her attempts to care for her kids alone, and she calls the parole board to get Joey out of prison. Later, while Kelly and the girls move her things into her new house, Alex reveals to Randal that she is pregnant. Finally, Julius plans to get revenge on Eddie.
The Colombian
Natalie meets with a parole officer about her son Joey getting out of jail. Meanwhile, Randal presses Brad about why he's been avoiding him. Brad explains to Randal that Alex is pregnant, and confesses that he's entertained some unpleasant thoughts about whose baby it could be, since he's already had a vasectomy. Brad comes to regret his treatment of Alex, however, when he finds out from his doctor that it's possible that his vasectomy failed, and he finally tells her about the procedure. Later, as Natalie consoles Esperanza after Edward's assault on Julius, Esperanza reveals that Julius is connected to a Colombian cartel. Fearing for Edward's life, Natalie urges Esperanza to warn her ex-husband. Then, at long last, Travis returns from Haiti, but he leaves Kelly in the dark.
The War Begins
Natalie offers her son Joey a less-than-warm welcome when he finally returns home from his stint in prison. Randal tries to make Alex jealous by making love to his wife, Marcie, in full view of his neighbor. Meanwhile, Alex pores over her calendar for confirmation that Brad is the father of her unborn child. Kelly agonizes over Travis' absence since his return home. When the two finally reunite, though, Kelly doesn't receive the proposal she joyfully anticipated. Instead, Travis informs her that he has met—and is marrying—someone else. Edward continues to behave erratically, telling Esperanza he loves her. Later, his home gets sprayed with bullets in a drive-by shooting.
Game Night
After Eddie's house gets sprayed with gunfire, he launches an investigation into Julius. Tensions heat up when Julius shows up at the police station—and then at Esperanza's house. Meanwhile, Jackie encourages Natalie to get Joey a job at Burger Fast, and Lushion finally has an interview at the police station. Elsewhere, Travis goes to see Kelly with the hopes of remaining in her life. When Kelly drops off Travis' things at his parents' house, she gets an earful from his mother, Mattaline, who makes it clear that her only issue with Kelly is her age. During a game night at Alex and Brad's house, a game of truth with Randal and Marcie leads to some awkward moments for everyone.
After Heartbreak
Eddie blames Esperanza for his fight with Julius and swears to get revenge. Meanwhile, even as his wife, Marcie, continues to press him about his emotional distance, Randal meets Alex for another tryst in the shed. This time, they are almost caught by Brad, who has his own suspicions about Alex's behavior. Elsewhere, Natalie lays down the law when Joey gets a job working at Burger Fast, and Lushion gets hired onto the police force as Eddie's partner. Finally, Kelly comes to grips with her new reality without Travis and makes plans to sell the house she just bought. Marcie proves to be a good friend to Kelly when she confides in her about her own situation. Later, the ladies rally around Kelly as they share their experiences of life after love.
14 Weeks
Randal continues to put off Marcie when she seeks to understand his distant behavior. To make matters worse, she finds another woman's perfume on one of his shirts. Marcie asks Alex about the perfume, which Marcie recognizes as a gift she gave Alex. Although Alex convinces her friend that there is a simple, innocent explanation to her query and puts Marcie's mind temporarily at ease, the conversation unnerves her. Later, Alex receives more unsettling news, this time about her pregnancy. Up the street, Travis further aggravates Kelly by showing up at her house—with his new fiancée. Elsewhere, Eddie is lured into a meeting with Julius' father, Julius Escada Sr., the kingpin of a Colombian cartel that has business in Maxine. The mob boss tells both men to stand down before a major feud ensues. Finally, Joey manages to keep his drug-dealing friend Quan at arm's length, but he makes a major mistake at his new job.
Peppa
Joey sneaks out of the house to attend a party down the street after he gets lured way by Quan. When he arrives home, he finds a furious Natalie waiting for him with the news that Burger Fast was burglarized after his shift. Eddie shows up at the police dispatch center while Esperanza is working, and coerces her supervisor into cutting her from the night shift. Meanwhile, Randal is still rejecting his wife's advances, and her doubts concerning his fidelity grow. Brad gets involved in the couple's marital problems when he sees Marcie drinking wine outside alone, and offers to speak to Randal about it. Finally, Marcie witnesses a text exchange between Randal and "Peppa" on the computer that confirms her worst fears: Randal is cheating.
Look Closely
Kelly discovers that Alex is Peppa and gives her friend an ultimatum. Looking for some understanding, Alex explains the details of her affair with Randal and asks for Kelly’s help to end it. Then, Travis decides it's time to tell Justice that he is not his father. Elsewhere, Joey looks to make things right after the robbery at Burger Fast by confronting Quan about his possible involvement, and a fight breaks out. Joey takes Quan's money and brings it to Natalie. Meanwhile, Eddie makes plans to retaliate against Julius, much to his friend Brad's chagrin. Later, Kelly has Marcie over to talk about her discovery of Randal's affair. Unwilling to reveal Alex's treachery outright, Kelly tells Marcie to "look closely" to figure out who Peppa is. As Marcie returns home, she notices the bumper sticker on Alex's car that reads, "PEPPA." Incensed, Marcie runs into her house and attacks Randal.
